D.B.Lolaq - Genius loci

Genius loci is Moustached Cowboy records' 6th release. Another D.B.Lolaq album, roughly in the same style as his last release on Moustached Cowboy Records, Elementals. Genius loci is an ode to the spirit of the places where the recordings were made. 7 Pieces in a slightly folky ritual ambient style. Recorded only with acoustic instruments and sound sources, with only minor digital treatment afterwards. Included in this release are 7 sigils, corresponding to the individual pieces. These represent the genius loci of the pieces, some abstract, some in the shape of spiritual maps, and some as classical symbols.

All recording by Peter Janssen, cover design by Monique Ingenhutt (more of her can be found on womoomow.redbubble.com), sigils by Peter Janssen

Rex Indignus - השורשים Roots

A new release is available now!

השורשים (Roots) is the second release by Rex Indignus on Moustached Cowboy Records. 6 Pieces in an atmospheric ambient drone style, built up with layers of field recordings and instrumental samples.

The album is a tribute to Rex Indignus' personal heritage, his recently discovered Jewish roots. In a time in which individual interests are forgotten more an more, people crave for an identity. Music can be an influence in this, as any form of art can. And music cannot exist without a cultural underground or identity. This is the circle of life. Jump on this merry-go-round that Rex Indignus has created and listen to his interpretation of his roots.

D.B.Lolaq - Elementals

Download HERE. For more streaming and download options click HERE

Elementals by D.B.Lolaq is Moustached Cowboy Records' 3rd release. Stylistically a change for the company: Elementals is a work in an ambient folk, or drone folk style, drastically different from the 1st and 2nd releases.

For this EP, D.B.Lolaq drew inspiration from the writings of 16th century alchemist Paracelsus. In these writings, Paracelsus speaks of spirits that correspond with the 4 elements. The element water has a spirit called Nymph, the element fire a spirit called Salamander, the element air corresponds with the spirit Sylvester and the element earth has a spirit called Pygmaeus. Elementals consists of 4 tracks, recorded with a minimum of digital means, with droning melodic lines, played on instrumental oddities like a fretless mandolin, a mouthbow and a fishbowl, accompanied by field recordings, fireplace recording in track 3 by Ludovic Kierasinski. Many of the recordings of the instruments were made outdoors at various places to capture the spirit of the elements.

Looking for new artists

Moustached Cowboy Records has been hibernating for a while now. But new work is coming up, D.B.Lolaq is working on a new album, based on the concept of elementals, spirits that correspond with the 4 elements. Read about it on his blog here. It may take some time before that one's done though. So in the mean time the Moustached Cowboy is looking for other work to release. So if you're an artist looking for release, have a go and send a track. We're primarily looking for music that crosses the boundaries of normality, mediocrity and the average, focusing on atmospheric, ambient music with an experimental twist. We're definitely NOT looking for mainstream pop-music, dance or other music in other styles that's already out there in great industrial numbers.

There are a few ways to send a demo. The first option, the easiest way, is to use the upload tool on the right side of the page. You can also send a high-quality mp3 (preferably 320 kbps, or at least 192 kbps or higher) or high quality ogg track to moustachedcowboyrecords@gmail.com. If you have your own artwork, that would be great, but it can also be taken care of by us.

Rex Indignus - Instrumentalist

Moustached Cowboy Records presents its second release: Rex Indignus – Instrumentalist. It's the first release by Rex Indignus, featuring 2 long pieces in a classical ambient drone style, both about 30 minutes long. Leave your mind to rest over the roomy and air- & water-filled flowing structures that Rex Indignus has created. The length of the 2 pieces is an ode to the compact-cassette era and the pieces follow a linear structure, suggesting a trip through 2 different environments, 2 different landscapes, revealing many sides of the human mind.

The title, Instrumentalist, is actually a philosophical pun: instrumentalist refers to the fact that the 2 pieces are made mainly with musical instruments, guitars, a kalimba, a toy piano and a mandolin. But at the same time instrumentalism is a philosophical school, holding the view that a concept or theory should be evaluated by how effectively it explains and predicts phenomena, as opposed to how accurately it describes objective reality. Withdrawing its judgment from reality, it actually gives the human mind room to concentrate on itself. The struggle to understand the outer world distracts people from what is truly real.

D.B.Lolaq - The Concept of Presence

Our first release, MCR001, is now available: D.B.Lolaq - The Concept of Presence.

It's D.B.Lolaq's 5th release, an EP with an emphasis on guitar sounds and melodic drones.

After the emotionally dark period in which Seven Pieces For The Papergirl was conceived it seemed to be inevitable to search for lighter sounds. Picking up the guitar was the best way to achieve that. This EP contains less field recordings than 7 Pieces and is composed with a more melodic approach.

All tracks composed recorded and produced by Peter Janssen. Cover photography by Geert Janssen
